Windows 10 Deadline Approaching: How to Transition Without Disruption

June 11, 2025

Key Date: October 14, 2025
That's when Microsoft ends all security updates and mainstream support for Windows 10.

After this cutoff, devices running Windows 10 will still boot, but they’ll no longer receive bug fixes, security patches, or technical support. That makes them prime targets for malware, ransomware, and other threats. If you haven’t started planning your transition, now’s the time.

Can My Current PCs Upgrade?

Before you start migrating, check if your devices can handle Windows 11.

Minimum requirements:

  • A supported 64-bit CPU (most 8th Gen Intel or 2nd Gen Ryzen and newer)
  • TPM 2.0
  • 4 GB RAM
  • 64 GB storage
  • Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 enabled in BIOS/UEFI

Run the Microsoft PC Health Check tool to verify compatibility.

Important: Microsoft will not relax the TPM 2.0 requirement. Most devices built before ~2018 likely won't qualify and may need replacement.

Migration Roadmap

    • Assessment: Inventory all hardware and critical apps. Identify anything that may block a smooth upgrade.
    • Pilot: Upgrade a small group of users to test application compatibility, device drivers, and user experience.
    • Remediation: Fix any issues with apps or peripherals. Update drivers, and fine-tune deployment scripts.
    • Broad Rollout: Use a staged deployment strategy — by department, site, or business unit. Schedule upgrades during off-hours where feasible.
    • Post-Go-Live: Offer user training and support. Update IT policies, and retire or repurpose unsupported hardware.
  • Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep mission‑critical Windows 10 PCs on ESU for specialized equipment?
Yes, but budget for rising ESU fees and increased management overhead. We suggest isolating those devices on a segmented network.

Will my Microsoft 365 apps stop working on Windows 10?
Microsoft 365 security updates end alongside Windows 10 on October 14 2025; functionality will degrade over time.

    Do I need new hardware?
Roughly 40% to 50% of existing PCs fail at least one Windows 11 requirement.

What happens if I miss the October 14, 2025 deadline?

Your PCs will still run, but without security patches, you'll be exposed to increasing cybersecurity threats. Compliance risks may also rise, especially in regulated industries.
